I was born in the West Midlands. I have lived in Dublin, Liverpool, Birmingham, Wales and India but settled in Epsom in 1970. I am married with two grown-up children and a grandson.
I am a Cambridge graduate, a Chartered Engineer, a retired Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers and an Honorary Life Member of the Steel Construction Institute. I am proud of the BSI Distinguished Service Certificate that marks my contributions to British, European and International standards for Steel Structures. I remain involved with harmonising European Standards.
I am a trustee of the Surrey Historic Buildings Trust and a former trustee of the Horton Chapel Community Project and of the Sunnybank Trust. I am also a member of Amnesty International, the Campaign to Protect Rural England, the Consumers’ Association, the Epsom Common Association and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
I was a Borough Councillor from 1999 to 2015 and served as the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell 2013/2014. I also spent 3 years as Leader of the Borough Council Lib Dem group, which at the time was the main opposition group on the Borough Council.
I was also a County Councillor from 2001 until I stood down in 2013. For 8 years I was Chair of the Lib Dem group, the main opposition group at County Hall. I was Chairman of SCC’s Local Committee in Epsom & Ewell 2009/2010 and Chairman of the Lower Mole Countryside Management Members Steering group 2011/2012.
I have been a School Governor since 1996 and currently serve as a governor of Epsom Primary School, Southfield Park Primary School and Stamford Green Primary School.
